English Department Student Won the Second Champion of Speech Competition

Rifka Pratama, one of the students in English Department, UNDIP won the second champion of speech competition held in HIMABSII Summit.  The speech competition was held in KOPERTIS Office Banjarmasin, Kalimantan.

HIMABSII is the association of English Department students in Indonesia. It is student organization for those who concern with the development of English and literature. They hold annual summit to have discussion on certain topics and hold speech competition.

This year Faculty of Humanities sent three delegations to participate in this year summit; they are
Rifka Pratama, Faizal Fajar Pratama and Otniel Lambe Adilolo.

Today, May 7th, 2010 the three students met the Vice Dean III, Drs. Mujid Farihul Amin, M.Pd to report on their participation in the summit and symbolically present Rifka Pratama trophy to Faculty of Humanities.

 

Workshop on Teaching Development: Time Saving Strategies

English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University together with RELO (Regional English Language Office) held a Workshop on Teaching Development  which aims to assist English language teachers and lecturers in developing their teaching method and resources by addressing some issues related to teaching English language as a foreign language. The Time Saving Strategies Workshop is the first of the series of two separate workshops: Time Saving Strategies Workshop (April 22nd, 2010) and Student Motivation Workshop (June 1st, 2010).

The Time Saving Strategy workshop was held on April 22nd, in Hall SEU. The participants were the faculty members of English Department and many lecturers from other universities in Semarang. This one day workshop offers ideas of what teachers can do in making the best of their  times in teaching the many classes. There were two speakers in the workshop, Maura Elizabeth Phelan whose paper was Introducing Alternative Assessment:  Continuums and Rubrics, and Stepanie Hanson whose paper titled Logs: Increasing English Practice While Decreasing Grading Load.

 

TOEFL Preparation Course

TOEFL Preparation Course

Community Service Unit (formerly BLM in Bahasa Indonesia), English Department, Faculty Humanities, Diponegoro University has finished conducting TOEFL Preparation Course for the students of the university. The course was attended by 30 students from various faculties of different majors including civil engineering, public health, animal science, electrical engineering, history, chemistry, urban and regional planning, and others. The final test was held on Wednesday, 23 December 2009 and attended by 27 students. The participants who were not present on the day are supposed to take the exam at the Service English Unit, as soon as possible by contacting Bu Yuni at 024 8413883 at work hours. The score of the test will be issued officially this week. The next TOEFL course will be held during the semester break from January to February next Year.

English Department Students Participated in HNMUN Program

Five students of English department (Achmat Qomarrudin, Pratama Yoga Nugroho, M Ardhy Muzaky, Dini Hajjarahmah, and Cresti Eka Fitriana) joined the United Nation program called Harvard National Model United Nations. The program, a discussion and debate forum for university students, was held in Boston, United States from February 9th – 19th 2010. The five students of the English Department together with other 10 students from other faculties in Diponegoro University had given their best to acknowledge Diponegoro University in international level. They had contributed their ideas in making this world a better place to live, as that was actually the purpose of the program

 

Five lecturers attended 56th TEFLIN in Malang

Five lecturers of the English department attended the 56th International TEFLIN Seminar held at the Hotel Kusuwa Agro, Batu Malang from January 8 to December 10, 2009. They were Drs. Suharno, M.Ed., Dra. Wiwiek Sundari, M.Hum., Drs. Mualimin, Dwi Wulandari, SS, MA. and Ms. Stephanie Hanson, a guest lecturer sponsored by Regional English Language Office (RELO). This year seminar committee was Maulana Malik Ibrahim Islamic State University of Malang.

This time the organizer is the State Islamic University (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim of Malang. By attending this seminar it is expected that the lecturers know the development of the practice of English teaching in Indonesia and the development of teaching theories and trends both in Indonesia and overseas. This time the seminar was attended by  participants from various countries including Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, United Kingdom, and the United States. The experts attending the seminar were , among others, Prof. George Scholz of the RELO Jakarta, Prof. Ali Saukah from UM Malang, Prof.. Wuri Sujatmiko from Widya Mandala Surabaya, Prof. William Grabe from Nothern Arizona University, Prof.. Chuck Sandy dari Chubu University of Japan, Sherry Preiss from The New School University, New York, Prof.. Lyle F. Bachman from UCLA, USA, and Prof.. Fredricka L. Fredricka L. from Nothern Arizona University, USA.
